American Legion Post 109 Veteran's Day Fundraiser
Artisan Contributors'
Jeff McIntyre (USAF Ret): "If You Build it, They Will Come!"
I joined the Air Force in 1980 and enjoyed flying B-52's for ten years before becoming an Acquisition and Test Manager. I retired from the Air Force in 2000 with a last assignment as the Chief of Air Force Operational Test Policy at Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. Our family moved to Tucson so I could begin work with Raytheon where I retired in 2010. I've always enjoyed working with my hands, particularly with wood related projects. While I've done dozens of home improvement type jobs such as adding a room, new kitchen cabinets etc. I'm relatively new to "Live Edge Wood Working". It's been a great deal of fun working in the Mesquite Beetle Workshop and using new and different tools. I have always enjoyed working on projects that benefit the American Legion Post 109 and the many Veterans' Programs they support. I had seen Beetle's work in the past and was glad I was able to recruit him to help with the Post 109 Veterans Day Fund Raiser. I also want to acknowledge several other gifted Artisans that work with Beetle in the Workshop; Mike "Hoser" Heyser, Joe Dulick, and Dave Sholes have contributed greatly to this effort. I hope the auction is a success for the post and it has been a lot of fun in the process. If you're interested in working with me on a special Wood Crafting Project, I can be contacted at: jeffmcintryre39@gmail.com |
Beetle Bailey (USAF Ret): "Welcome to my Journey!"
I'm retired from the USAF and flew F-4s (the reason I go by "Beetle"). Miss Pam and I have been in our dream home for 8 years which is located in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains in Southern Arizona. As I learned the craft of wood turning, I began gifting pieces to many of my HS friends and was touched by their kind words of support. This inspiration along with the support of literally Dozens of volunteers, The Mesquite Beetle Charity Auction in February 2020, raised over $13,000 for homeless Veterans' in the Tucson area. Again, thank you everyone for your support, particularly the Tempe High School Buffalo class of 72'...Go Buffs! Miss Pam and I were asked by Jeff McIntyre to participate in the American Legion Post 109, Veterans' Day Fund Raiser. It is truly our honor to be associated with this great organization and event. If you're interested in other Wood Crafting or Wood Turning Projects, I can be contacted through my website at: http://www.mesquitebeetle.com/ |
Joe Dulick (Former USAF): "I'm Just an Average Joe With a Mind That Drifts From Project to Project!"
I'm just your average Joe. Did one hitch in the USAF to learn electronics and fly. Learned electronics. Made a great choice to join an outfit that did nuclear weapons blast monitoring. Got REALLY lucky being chosen for instructor duty in our systems school working with engineers and scientists. That set my career for life. Retired as an Operations Engineer for a medical company making hemodialysis equipment. My OCD mind drifts to many hobbies. Ham radio, pistol shooting, model railroading. Juke Boxes and antique radio refurbishment also keep me occupied. My newest passion is woodworking. I have finally found an outlet for my creative side and enjoy the challenges and problem solving involved in fabricating unique wood art. If you're interested in working with me on a special Wood Crafting Project, I can be contacted at: dulick761@comcast.net Cheers and if you're a Ham, 73 |
Mike (Hoser) Heyser (USAF Ret): "I'm Getting Very Comfortable Working With Live Edge Wood!"
I’ve never thought of myself as an artisan before. I see myself as the builder, not so much the architect if you will. To my knowledge, I can't look at a piece of wood and say "There's a shelf waiting to be crafted, or bowl ready to be turned", and if I think the wood is talking to me, well I certainly woodn't share that with anyone. (that's a pun). However, I can at times execute the vision of others, and rest assured, I always hear my lovely wife Amanda when she expresses a vision or tasking...seriously though, we do make a great team and I'm thankful that we both enjoy the projects and journeys we accomplish together. I’m getting very comfortable working with live edge wood crafts through practice and with Beetle's coaching. Amanda and I were truly honored to be recruited for this endeavor and proud to be associated with Post 109 and this worthy event. If you're interested in working with me a special Wood Crafting Project, I can be contacted at: MHeyser@Cox.Net |
Dave Sholes (USAF Ret): "With Everything, The More You Do the Better You Get!"
After 35 years in uniform serving our great country its nice to get lost in creative endeavors. I have 21 years active duty with the USAF and 14 Years with the Air National Guard. I retired from Military Service right here in Tucson AZ, with the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Test Center. I got into woodworking and knife making as a hobby, as with everything, the more you do the better you get. I find it very rewarding to turn a piece of wood or steel into something beautiful and useful. I especially enjoy woodworking with Live Edge pieces, particularity Mesquite. I also enjoy welding. It's an honor to be asked to help out with Post 109 Veterans' Day Fund Raiser. I would enjoy working with you on a Custom Live Edge piece of Furniture, Knife, or Pistol Grips. Thanks David Sholes Custom Creations ddsholes@yahoo.com |

Sharon Toal: "Life is great...That's why I paint"
I'm a retired banker and watercolor painter. I started painting after I retired in 2016. After seeing all kinds of paintings and drawings throughout the years, I have always said that I won’t buy that because I can paint that! Painting has become a wonderful outlet for me to enjoy nature better. To look at the world with color in your eyes is such a marvelous experience. My goal is to help others see the color and detail in the world we live in. I had gifted Beetle with a painting of his RV-7A and he enjoyed it so much that he asked if I would Paint the Post 109 F-4E, Thunderbird. It was an honor and lots of fun to participate in this worthy cause. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it, should you like your own custom painted aircraft or any painting for that matter, please feel free to contact me through my website at: https://www.artsysharon.com/ |
Angela Bell (Post 109 Ladies Aux Member): "My Art is Where I go to Lose Myself!"
It has been my honor and pleasure to have donated quite a few art pieces, over the years, to American Legion fund raisers, and the Legion riders poker run auctions. My art is where I go to lose myself, whether using canvas and acrylic, or wood, and wood burning, whatever the medium of choice each piece I create is completely unique to itself. As a proud 25 yr Air Force spouse, this flag was created with my family in mind, (especially my husband, and two oldest sons) who have dedicated their lives to the service of this great nation. I'm so grateful and proud of all our veterans and their families, who sacrifice so much on a daily basis. If you'd like to work with me on a special Art or Wood Crafting Project, I can be contacted through through Beetle's website at: http://www.mesquitebeetle.com/ |
Pamela Bailey: "With Every Quilt of Valor, I'm Praying for Them!"
With my wonderful husband Beetle’s support, I have been making quilts, especially for Veterans. I love creating each quilt with the person in mind and with every stitch I am praying for them. The quilt I have made for the auction has been created with ALL Veterans in mind and prayers of thanks and appreciation for their service and sacrifice which have allowed me to have the life I have. Most especially I am thankful for my husband’s and my son Ryan’s service. They are my heroes as are all Veterans. It is my privilege to offer this quilt for the auction for the American Legion Post 109 Veteran's Day Fund Raiser. Their work with Veterans' Programs is commendable. If you'd like to work with me on a special Quilting, Sewing, or Wood Crafting Project, I can be contacted at: BaileyPamRV7A@gmail.com |
Scooby: "Booze N' Brushes!"
For those that don’t know me, I’m Scooby. I’m an art teacher for a local school district and have been running a fundraiser for the Legion Sons and Auxiliary for the past year called Booze n’ Brushes. I’m offering 2 seats in a painting class of your choice. It’s a great date night or a chance to hang out with a friend and learn a new hobby! Everyone always has a great time, and classes fill fast. See the Booze n’ Brushes page on FB to see what we paint!
